Sustainability

Healthy Management

Prioritizing sustainable development is part of our mission, it is in our DNA. We operate on three pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Social and Economic.

In addition to preventive measures and measures to reduce environmental impacts, the company seeks to maintain a relationship based on communication, transparency and encouragement with local communities in the regions where it operates. Moreover, we count on the support of an Integrated Management System (IMS).

Sustainability is our essence

The waterway modal is proven to be the most ecological transport of all. A barge used to transport grain is equivalent to removing 1,200 trucks from the roads. Specifically in the Tapajós River region, one of Hidrovias do Brasil’s operating areas, the operation that transports cargo across rivers would be comparable to removing around 90,000 trucks a year from the roads. Furthermore, the waterway system emits less CO2 per transported ton.

Sustainability is our essence

Our land and waterway operations seek to consider the environmental carrying capacity in alignment with a strategic and collaborative vision. We are treading paths of integration and collaboration to leverage our positive, mitigating and preventive actions, in a broad sense.

SIX POSITIVE IMPACT COMMITMENTS
CLIMATE CHANGES Support the decarbonization of the Brazilian logistics industry, offering inovate and reliable waterway and maritime transport and achieving zero emission of greenhouse gases
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Promote a safe work environment and a diverse and inclusive culture for the continued development of our worforce
LOCAL DEVELOPMENT Contribute to the social and economic development and the communities living in the neighboring areas
VALUE CHAIN Ensure that the origin of the product transported is free from deforestation and includes ESG criteria in the selection and qualification of suppliers
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Mitigate our environmental impacts and support the regeneration of river ecosystems that allow our navigation
ETHICS AND TRANSPARENCY Tirelessly cultivate ethics and transparency in the relationship with all stakeholders

The ESG agenda is of the utmost importance for the Company’s strategic development. Therefore, the Company continues to advancewith the development of its sustainability platform and short, medium and long-term goals.
See below some of the actions already carried out by Hidrovias and which exemplify our commitment to this topic:

Climate Change – – Although the Company is positioned as one of the cleanest transportation modes when compared to other logistics alternatives such as land transport, we understand that we need to do more than simply exist as a low-carbon business. In this sense, in 2020, we made our first greenhouse gas inventory, considering scopes 1, 2 and 3 for all operations in Latin America. We are currently identifying opportunities for decarbonization and then we will discuss and approve short, medium and long-term goals. In addition, Hidrovias has developed numerous projects related to this issue, such as:

  • 1. partnership with WEG to create an electric (hybrid) pusher to significantly reduce emissions from diesel combustion engines.
  • 2. purchase of renewable energy for operations through the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN) and the implementation of solar projects to supply Arconorte’s operations.
  • 3. mapping and action plan of social and environmental risks, which, among other issues, seek to address matters related to biodiversity, waste and effluent management, and the relationship with traditional communities, converging to restore ecosystems and contribute to maintaining the climate.
